Goodbye Shehata!

Well, I honestly don’t know what to say, he’s brought us some of our best memories with 3 successive ACN triumphs, the Italy match and even the Brazil match. But seriously, has there ever been a coach so successful yet so abysmal at the same time?

This is not a knee jerk reaction, Shehata has given us lots of fond memories, and for that we will forever be grateful. But Shehata has also managed some awful records which will tarnish his reputation forever.

His greed and selfishness have set up his downfall. If he had any tact he would’ve stepped down after the 2010 African Cup of Nations success. He should’ve known when to stop, he should’ve known that enough is enough.

But no, against the voice of reason, he decided to push on. It’s pretty obvious he went on for the money, because let’s face it, he won’t find that 100,000 pounds a month deal anywhere else. But sometimes money isn’t everything Shehata, and today you’ve understood why.

Today, the 5th of June, Shehata has led Egypt **for the very first time** OUT of the African Cup of Nations. Today, Shehata has broken Egypt’s proud and withstanding record. Thank you Shehata.

Thank you for the Ivory Coast match back in the 2006 qualifiers, where you played 8 matches preparing for it using a 4-4-2 formation and yet you fielded an untested 3-5-2 formation.

Thank you for the USA match, where you somehow managed to blow any chance of progressing in the Confederations tournament, and lost 3-0, that’s right THREE NIL against USA (who had already lost 2 games and thought they had no chance in hell to qualify), when a 2-0 loss would’ve guided you through to the next round.

Thank you for the Zambia match in Cairo, where you had a FULL squad and still only managed a 1-1 draw.

Thank you for the Algeria match in Annaba, where you played a perfect first half without conceding one shot on goal, and yet you managed to lose 3-1 in the end, what kind of god-awful halftime team talk was that?

Thank you for the Algeria match in Sudan, where you somehow managed to lose to a demoralized team that you’d just beaten 4 days prior to it. A match which ended the careers of Mohamed Barakat (retirement) and Mohamed AbuTreka (mentally).

Thank you for the Sierra Leone, Niger, South Africa (2) matches, where you led the 3 time African champions to 2 losses and 2 draws, scoring 1 goal in the process and conceding thrice as much.

Yes Shehata you can look back at your managerial career and think that you did a pretty good job, but the aforementioned matches will always be a permanent stain to your career.

May this be a lesson to anyone who doesn’t know when to stop.

I just keep in mind that Pharaos still remains the great out of the greatest in Africa. They brought another image to the ACN since a decade and Shehata was the ‘artisan’.
today Egypte is out, tomorrow Cameroun will be; what level of ACN are we going to live in 2012?

Haha, well by the looks of it, the teams that may/will not qualify as of yet are:
Algeria, Nigeria, Tunisia, Cameroon, Egypt, Mali, DR Congo and Angola. Now correct me if I am wrong, but all 8 of those teams were in the last edition of the AFCON, three of whom made the semi finals. Egypt current champions, Tunisia, Nigeria, Cameroon and Algeria, all ex champions, Algeria and Nigeria came fourth and third respectively last year. If they don’t qualify what kind of God awful AFCON are we going to have to watch in 2012?

And it just highlights again the issue once again of this horrifically flawed qualification process by CAF.

no name dude, we aren’t thankful about anything? then you don’t know us.

Abdoul, thank you for your kind words, good luck with your next games, and hopefully you will qualify.

Kazi, the CAF just like FIFA needs to be reassembled. It’s run by a bunch of the most incompetent bastards ever. But honestly, we have no-one to blame but ourselves this time round in the qualifications, we didn’t win a single match and we were awful. Shehata has overstayed his welcome because he loves the money more than he loves his pride.

Shahata had a great Egyptian national team run. Great respect to him and what he has accomplished over the past 7 years or so. Understandably as fans we are frustrated with exit of the 2012 African Cup of Nations. As we should have long learned in our past mistake for qualifying for WC 2010 that early matches are vital and very important to come out ahead with good results to make the situation more easy on a team. If Shahata is to leave who fill this big gap to follow. I can only hope that we learn form this as well and excel to a higher status of soccer as we should have and the Egyptians know we are very well capable of being a world class leader in football as we proved many times WC 2014 IS OUR DREAM YALLA EGYPT RAISE YOUR HEADS UP WE DID WELL AND WE WILL COME BACK STRONGER THAN EVER ~INCHALLAH!~YES WE CAN!~…………

MAYBE MANUEL JOSE OF AL AHLY TO COACH EGYPTS NT?????? JUST A THOUGHT WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?! : D

I think Manuel Jose would solve all our problems, the man’s a genius and knows all Egyptian players better than Egyptian themselves. But ofcourse Zamalek fans would object to such a thing, they’ll never accept him to represent them.

Looks like it’s between Tarek el-Ashry and Mokthar Mokhtar for now.

The only consolation I have is that there will be another African Cup in 2013 as they will be moving to odd years. Does anyone know which of the two cups (2012 or 2013) leads to Confederations Cup qualification?

Hany, you still have a chance. Try to win the remaining two games. Please note that The two best runners-up will be determined considering only the results against the first and third of each group. The results of matches against the fourth in the group will be annulled. A new classification will be established and the two best runners-up will be determined by the following parameters in this order:

1. Highest number of points
2. Goal difference
3. Highest number of goals scored
4. Match replay in case of parity

Not sure Hatem, I think it’s going to be the 2013 as it’s the latest one before the 2014 Confederations Cup.

sscouser, the chances are extremely slim. I don’t even think we’ll beat Sierra Leone away from Cairo. There’s no chance we’re finishing second. Niger already have 6 points and I can see them beating South Africa and snatching second spot.

all i got to say is confederations cup 2010 USA came from behind with miracle to beat Egypt and get past through the next stage Im not saying it will happen to Egypt in qualifying but the chance is there just very slim.

why do you say that he didnt know when to step down. technically egypt could still qualify and if they did, shehata could have led them to a fourth consecutive title, and if he had, you wouldnt be saying that he should have stepped down two years ago after he won in 2010. youre just upset because you wont be going to the african cup this year, which is understandable. but be reasonable, this isnt the coach’s fault…he didnt all of a sudden become a bad coach between 2010 and now.

in my opinion you didnt qualify for a combination of the following two reasons. 1. african teams are getting a lot better very quickly. 2. your players are getting old and probably take their places in the team for granted and therefore don’t put in the necessary effort in training and in games. egypt needs a influx of new talented players into the national team, something you have an abundance of. but this non-qualification was not shehata’s fault. im confident he would have led you to the world cup in 2014, i just hope that whoever replaces him can achieve half of what he did. thats just my opinion, i’d love to hear what you guys think of it.

hi egys,

its kinda strange an algerian feels sad for egypt!! but its really the truth!!! the best african team of the last 5 years and the winner of 06, 08 and 10 not qualified??? what a strange tournament this going to be?? honestly i dont get it how egypt could fail big time…we those players its much harder to not qualifie than to fail…well, im 100% sure this is just a bad periode and that the phraos will be back 2013…..just the same for algeria, who broke my heart after that defait in morroco, but what can i say except the morrocans deserved that victory, at the end it ciuld have been easiyl 5:0 or 6:0…we were so fucking bad, i guess and i hope that was the last chapter of that team…its time for a new one….please dear ahly cairo, take good care of sayoud, give him the chance to improve…its strange, but i guess one of our biggest hopes in the future could be one of egypts league best players….amir sayoud, im sure hes gonna be ahlys best player in one or two years, the one wholl replaces abou trika in near future.
so my friends, as you can see algeria shares egypts problems right now…we both have a team that is done, we need to rebuild, good luck on that!!

salam,

Seeing as how egypts U23s are set to play in the last qualifying group before the olympics, i was just wondering who is on the team? Which players do you guys have the most hope for? Egypt’s national team is in a very bad period right now, and these u23s are the next in-line for a call-up….just wanted to get to know your team while they’re still young.

Hello,

My name is Nadir and I work on a blog called I Luv Football and am currently looking for someone to interview regarding Egyptian football and the current teams e.g. young prospects, top three players and maybe your thoughts on how Egypt can improve its football etc. Could you assist please? Your site will be mentioned and linked in the article and i would be grateful for any assistance you could give me. I have already conducted interviews with well known European football writers as well as their South American and Asian counterparts, I would really appreciate writing something on Egypt so my readers can get an insight into football in the country especially as they hold the African Cup of Nations. Would you be able to do this? I have copied a link to show you an example of a previous interview.
