History lesson!!
hey there people!!…since this is the first Egypt blog and a lot of you don’t know much about Egyptian football so this will be an introductory blog. don’t worry, i know that you aren’t looking for dates and that you don’t like it so i won’t mention a lot of them.
Egypt was the leading country in football in both Africa and middle east. first – you ill read this word a lot- to qualify for world cup in 1934 only to be beaten by hungry – football giants by then- 4/2. second appearance was in 1990. there in italia 90, the pharaohs impressed. Egypt played the first match against Netherlands -European champions- and earned a draw 1/1 in a match they should have won. then they kept a clean sheet against Ireland 0/0. finally against England they lost 1/0 after missing a dozen of chances. Egypt earned respect from the world after this tournament and was a strong candidate to qualify for next world cup , except for some sins from Egyptian association.>
back to African championships, Egypt is 5 times African champions -African record- 1957/58/86/98 and 2006.three times of them in Cairo stadium.in the first 2 titles, only 3 teams participated in the tournament and it wasn’t as powerful as we see today. but in 1986, 125 thousand fans watched Egypt beat Roger Milla’s Cameroon by penalty shootouts 5/4. 1n 1998, Egypt went to burkinafasso without any expectations from anyone. but they advanced with the matches and reached the final to beat south Africa 2/0 by 2 wonderful goals from Ahmed Hassan and Tarek Mostafa. finally in 2006, Egypt beat Drogba & co. 2 times 3/1 in the first round and 4-3 by penalty shootouts in the final to reach the glory and celebrate their fifth cup in front of their mighty fans.
Egypt has 2 main clubs: ahly and zamalek. the 2 Cairo giants compete in the Cairo derby. every now and then , ismaily club- known as egypt’s Brazil- compete with them.the three clubs has the most popularity among Egyptian fans. the 3 also won 11 African club champions league titles-African record-
the current squad include stars like Mohamed Zidan, Mido(probably), Ghaly, Amr Zaki, Ahmed Hassan. Abu Trika, El Hadary coached by Hassan Shehata.
this was a “brief” summary of Egypt’s football history.and from history we learn lesson. our “lesson” today, is that Egypt always has the superiority in Africa, dominating Africa for ages but facing competition now from African countries who have European-based players but Egypt is up to the challenge.GO EGYPT!!
stay tuned for latest updates from the Egyptian national team camp preparing for Ghana 2008.

Yeye you can say that Etoile Sahel from Tunisia won over Egypt’s national team. all players in al ahly are playing for the nationalteam and Egypt has only two players in Europe and i don’t think they’ll go far in the CAN 2008

well ummm, i first apologize for any grammar mistakes…i am not a native speaker. second, these chest-beating are all facts, Egypt played football in the world cup and the Olympics before Africa knew what is football, and this is a fact and you can ask all great African players what does Egypt mean in African football.
to skander, playing for the club is sth and playing for the national team is a totally different thing.it doesn’t matter how many players we have in Europe because last tournament Egypt only had 2 and won beating Senegal and cote d’ivoire twice with there full European-based squad. by the way egypt has more than 2 players, it is not my problem that you don’t know them.
they have no more than 6, and like three of them play in turkey…

Meh, at least watching you trying to explain Egypt’s defeats should be fun!
And I don’t worry about your grammar.. I think if you read enough of even just the other blogs here and on The Offside, you’ll improve in no time (and the best way to improve your English is to write in English!). GL

Welcome, Tamim, from the France NT page. I’m glad to see us getting more African blogs — soccer coverage in general tends to be very Eurocentric. Have fun with the blog!

Mar7aba ya Tamim. Welcome to WCB, I wish your team the best in the African Cup as long as our paths don’t cross
Although if you look at the match fixtures, if you qualify #1 in your group and we qualify #2 or if the opposite happens, we’ll be seeing an arab derby in the first game of the second round!

who said that!!!!!!
i don’t hate tunis at all…if you read my comments i said that i hope we play together in the final!!!
when i watched ESS VS AHLY. i was shocked.they were swearing at the etoile players, throwing bottles and slippers at them, one etoile player was dragged into the crowd and he hurt his head, the egyptians were treatin us like we werent arabz or muslims. and i remember from the last african cup of nations in egypt, the egyptians crowd were always against us and they aere abusing the fans

well, let’s take each incident at a time
first,ahly-el nejm, i am not ahly fan and i condemn what they did.but they were frustrated that they lost the cup in a dramatic way and the referee was vey unfair and didn’t whistle for 2 penalties. plus, the tunisian fans provoked the fans by wasting too much time by falling to the ground.
second, tunisia national team, in the first match against zambia egyptian fans were totaly supporive for tunis but what happened is that al ahram newspaper wrote that tunisian fans were supporting coted’ivoire against egypt and that there were tunisian flags in cairo stadium with cote d’ivoire. so this was a naural reaction.
third, egyptian teams are treated very badly when they go to tunis maghreb, algerie and they are thrown with stones or bottles and they are always insulted.in 2006 caf final between ahly-sfaxy tunisian fans made a banner with a pharoh kissing the legs of a tunisian player!!!. what do you expect. it is a derby and this is only a rivalry in sports not more. but in real life egyptian love tunis!!
hope you understand now
cheers,
egypt not hate tunis or otheres ,,egypt biger and greates then that,, just the probleam is the tunisian and elgrian and morracon players .not play fair and always kill the time and take the match by much out time..and egypt is the big brothere for the arab and the arab experins come by egypt hand …forgive me my friend …we r 80 milione and all the arab together not 40 milione …..so we r thing and all the othere thing ..we r the pharous..salam

Congratulations Egypt. Love the way you play football, you are a credit to this game. being muslim living in South Africa, it’s great to see my muslim brothers go out there and give their best and succeed. You make me proud Egyptian National Team. Great discipline, solidarity, teamwork and guts. Once again Congratulations, you put a smile on many muslims faces tonight, especially mine.
Thank you so much Yasmin for your kind remarks.

Welcome… better grammar and less chest-beating and perhaps your blog entries won’t be so cringe inducing.
These parts:
“earned a draw 1/1 in a match they should have won”
“Egypt earned respect from the world after this tournament and was a strong candidate to qualify for next world cup , except for some sins from Egyptian association.”
“our “lesson” today, is that Egypt always has the superiority in Africa, dominating Africa for ages”
in particular come across as somewhat whiny. It doesn’t seem like an appropriate attitude for a WCB… it feels like (in the words of John McCain) you’re buying your own BS.
Sorry, and I hope for the best!
